Silvia Pinal, legendary actress and the final icon of Mexico's Golden Age of cinema, passes away at 93.

Mexican actress Silvia Pinal, the last diva of national cinema, passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. Her family confirmed that she had been hospitalized in Mexico City due to a urinary tract infection in the days leading up to her death. The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico honored Pinal on social media, stating:

"With a career spanning more than six decades, she participated in over 60 films and plays. Her legacy remains a cornerstone of cinema, theater, and television in Mexico. May she rest in peace."

Born on September 12, 1931, in Guaymas, Sonora, Pinal's multifaceted career spanned acting, business, production, television hosting, and even politics. She gained international acclaim with the Spanish director Luis Buñuel’s films Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962), and Simon of the Desert (1964). These works challenged societal norms of the time and showcased Pinal’s talent for portraying complex characters. Viridiana won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, solidifying her global recognition.

Beyond cinema, Pinal left her mark in theater with roles in Hello, Dolly! and Mame, and on television with her long-running series Mujer, casos de la vida real, which tackled significant social issues over two decades. Her final stage appearance was in 2022, performing in Caperucita ¡Qué onda con tu abuelita! in a wheelchair due to her health.

TelevisaUnivisión commemorated her career, stating she had contributed over 5,000 hours of artistic content and remained one of the most iconic figures in the history of Mexican entertainment.

Pinal's personal life was as dynamic as her career. She was married four times, including to Cuban actor Rafael Banquells and Mexican-Venezuelan singer Enrique Guzmán. Her children include actress Silvia Pasquel, singer Alejandra Guzmán, and the late Viridiana Alatriste. Her grandchildren, including singer-actress Stephanie Salas and model Michelle Salas, continue her artistic legacy.

Silvia Pinal’s contributions to the fine arts, her pioneering spirit, and her enduring love for Mexico remain an inspiration to future generations.
