FBI Calls Palm Springs Clinic Explosion an ‘Intentional Act of Terrorism’
An explosion outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, on Saturday morning has been declared an “intentional act of terrorism” by the FBI. The blast, which occurred just before 11 a.m. on Indian Canyon Drive, killed one person and injured at least four others. Debris from the explosion scattered for more than 250 yards, and nearby windows were shattered.
“This was no accident—this was terrorism,” said Akil Davis, assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. He confirmed that authorities believe the clinic was the intended target.
The identity of the deceased remains under investigation, and officials have not confirmed whether the individual was the perpetrator. “We’re not prepared to comment on the relationship between the decedent and our person of interest,” Davis added.
Authorities initially feared the possibility of additional explosive devices and shut down the surrounding area. FBI bomb technicians are currently working to determine the exact cause and origin of the blast. Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills emphasized the scale of the crime scene and the complexity of the investigation, calling it a “massive effort” requiring coordination with federal agencies.
“This is one of the largest bombing investigations in Southern California since the 2018 Aliso Viejo spa explosion,” Davis said.
The blast led to a fire and partial building collapse. The American Reproductive Centers of Palm Springs confirmed that all staff, as well as all stored reproductive materials, were unharmed. “This moment has shaken us—but it has not stopped us,” the clinic said in a statement, adding it would resume operations on Monday.
Authorities also conducted a search at a property in Twentynine Palms believed to be linked to the case, though no further details have been released.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Pam Bondi both issued statements of support, as federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies continue to coordinate their response.
Chief Mills vowed resilience: “Terrorism came knocking on Palm Springs’ door. We survived. And this city will rise.”
