Global Reaction to Trump’s Plan for Gaza and Displacement of Palestinians
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a controversial plan to assume control of the Gaza Strip following the forced displacement of Palestinians, sparking widespread concerns that he is endorsing an ethnic-cleansing campaign.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump suggested that Palestinians “would love to leave” Gaza. He proposed that the United States take long-term control of the enclave, envisioning its transformation into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
In response to backlash, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt attempted to clarify Trump’s comments. Speaking in Guatemala City, Rubio stated that any Palestinian displacement would be temporary, allowing for reconstruction efforts.
“In the interim, obviously, people are going to have to live somewhere while you’re rebuilding it,” Rubio said.
Trump’s proposal has drawn sharp criticism from leaders and organizations worldwide.
Hamas
Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri condemned the plan as an “expulsion from their land” and warned it could destabilize the region.
“Trump’s remarks about controlling Gaza are ridiculous and absurd. Such ideas would ignite the region,” Abu Zuhri said. “This is a recipe for chaos and tension, and the people of Gaza will not allow these plans to pass.”
Another senior Hamas figure, Izzat al-Risheq, warned that Trump’s proposal would “pour oil on the fire.”
“These statements reflect deep ignorance of Palestine and the region,” he said. “Gaza is not a commodity that can be bought and sold. The U.S. continues to show blatant bias toward Israel and against the rights of the Palestinian people.”
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)
PLO Secretary-General Hussein al-Sheikh rejected any proposal that involves displacing Palestinians from their homeland.
“The Palestinian leadership affirms its firm stance that a two-state solution, based on international legitimacy and law, is the only guarantee for security, stability, and peace,” he said on X.
Palestinian Authority
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also strongly opposed any forced displacement, calling it a violation of international law.
“We will not allow any infringement on the rights of our people, for which we have struggled for decades and made great sacrifices,” Abbas stated.
He reiterated that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through the establishment of a Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.
