Jimmy Carter Funeral: Family Arrives in Plains for Burial Following D.C. Memorial Service

Presidential Unity

Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away last month at the age of 100, was honored Thursday with a state funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The ceremony, attended by all living U.S. presidents, marked a national day of mourning. Following the service, Carter's body was transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest.

Plains, a small town in south Georgia with a population of fewer than 1,000 residents, is located approximately 120 miles south of Atlanta. Carter was born there in 1924 and spent much of his early life on his family’s farm in the nearby community of Archery. He later moved to Plains, graduated from the local high school, and eventually returned to the town after serving in the Navy.

Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, also a Plains native, took over his father’s farming business and built a modest ranch house in 1961. The home, valued at just $167,000 in 2018, served as Carter’s primary residence throughout much of his post-presidential life. Despite his global impact, Carter remained deeply rooted in Plains, frequently attending and teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church, where a private funeral service is scheduled to take place Thursday evening.

Plains has become a hub for Carter-related landmarks, drawing many visitors over the years. Carter once expressed his desire to be buried in Plains to help boost the town’s tourism economy, further solidifying his enduring connection to the place he called home.
