**Biden and Xi Meet, Sending Signals That May Resonate with Trump**

 Donald J. Trump has pledged a more confrontational strategy, contrasting with the Biden administration's efforts to steer clear of direct conflict with Beijing.


When President Biden met with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, on Saturday in Peru, their discussion centered on the intense superpower rivalry that Biden has worked to prevent from escalating into open conflict. It may have been their last direct exchange on the matter.  

Yet, their words seemed aimed not just at each other but also at an absent figure: Donald J. Trump. With h is return to the presidency in January, Trump has vowed a tougher stance toward Beijing, signaling a potential shift in U.S.-China relations.  

In his opening remarks, Xi appeared to deliver a pointed warning as relations between the two nations face a new era of uncertainty following the U.S. election.  

“Make the wise choice,” Xi urged in a conference hall at a Lima hotel where the Chinese delegation was based. “Keep exploring the right way for two major countries to get along well with each other.”
In his opening remarks, President Biden appeared to advocate for preserving ties with Beijing, even as Donald Trump signals plans for tougher policies, including harsher tariffs on China and appointing hard-liners to key positions in his administration.  
“These conversations prevent miscalculations and ensure the competition between our two countries does not escalate into conflict — keeping it as competition, not conflict,” Biden stated.  

“That’s our responsibility, and over the last four years, I believe we’ve demonstrated it’s possible to maintain this kind of relationship,” he added ahead of the meeting, which lasted an hour and 40 minutes.
